    About the Destination

The Ultimate Escapes Los Cabos villas are located about 1,100 miles south of Los Angeles on Baja California Sur, at the southwest tip of the Baja Peninsula (see map on next page). The peninsula consists of one long granite ridge extending almost 1,000 miles -- longer than Italy -- from Mexico's northernmost city of Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas at its southern tip. Look in one direction and you will see a panorama of pristine coastline. Look the other way and you will see harsh, dry desert scrub that ostensibly only snakes, lizards, and golfers could love.

Los Cabos (the Capes), is the region that encompasses the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. The two towns are separated by about 18 miles of hotel-lined beaches (known as "The Corridor") and differences in style. Cabo San Lucas is the more famous of the two towns, with much more night life, shopping, and recognized landmarks. As a result, Cabo San Lucas attracts cruise ships and Spring Breakers. San Jose del Cabo is smaller, more quaint and unassuming, a favorite of the locals, sporting some of the best restaurants in the area.

    Airport
Most major airlines fly into Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).

The distance between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas is less than 30 minutes so all homes are easily reached via the main highway.

    Travel Insurance
Due to the unpredictability of weather we recommend that you purchase travel insurance. There is a wide array of choices available, ranging from ticket cancellation to full medical coverage. We have listed a few basic plans from providers on the Members Only Web Site to give an overview of the various coverage options.

    Passports
Effective January 8, 2007, the U.S. Department of State now requires passports for all U.S. citizens traveling by air and sea to international destinations. This change affects travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda in addition to other countries now requiring passports. On January 1, 2008, the rule will extend to travel by land to and from Canada and Mexico. Please visit this link for more information - http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

    Traveling with Minors
All children under the age of 18 must have a valid passport when traveling out of the country. If a minor is traveling with only one parent or with adults who are not their parents (this includes traveling with grandparents), the minor will need to have a notarized authorization form signed by both parents giving permission for the child to travel outside the country. While airlines do not always check for authorization, they can refuse to allow the child to board the airplane without the permission form.

    Ground Transportation
A rental car is highly recommended. We recommend using Dollar or Alamo due to their location and service. Please be aware that even with a confirmed reservation, cars are not always available and lines at the airport for a car rental are frequently long. If you decide to rent a car and take excursions to the surrounding towns, we urge you to take caution at night.

If you wish to avoid the crowds at the rental counters, we recommend that you allow a shuttle service to pick you up at the airport. We can then have a rental car delivered, at no additional cost, to the property to avoid the long rental lines at the airport after your flight.

Taxis do offer service in the area, however, they are not easy to hail from the property and there are often long waits.

    Driving in Mexico
Generally driving in this area of Mexico is not too difficult. Roads are in good shape and the new toll road from the airport speeds your trip. Cars have U.S.-style, left hand steering, vehicles drive on the right, and traffic signals and laws are generally the same (though it is good to familiarize yourself with the local driving regulations). Near Cabo, parallel access roads are used for local traffic and you can merge on and off the main road. Speed is given in km/hour and unless posted, you can usually go 100kph (60 miles per hour).

    Special Notes
  • Although Spanish is the native language, most people speak some English. Shops, restaurants and other services normally have at least 1 bilingual employee.
  • Electrical is the same as U.S.
  • The properties have filtered water for drinking
  • For the most current exchange rate please visit www.xe.com
  • Your cell phone may or may not have coverage in Los Cabos. Check with your provider to see if they can add temporary international access.
  • There is limited access to the One & Only Palmilla Resort. Guests of the resort have priority for all services and consequently as a homeowner at Palmilla, Ultimate Escapes' member access is restricted at the facilities during peak times. We have arranged for service at a couple of alternate resorts should this occur (check with your local host). Ultimate Escapes' members are prohibited from using the Palmilla main pool and fitness center at all times.
  • Cash is the preferred method of payment for most transactions, though most establishments will accept credit cards (but may provide lower prices for cash transactions). Typically US dollars can be used in place of Mexican pesos. In fact, many tourist locations may only show prices in US dollars.
  • The Premiere, Signature and Elite homes have a safe for keeping passports and valuables.
  • All homes have wireless high-speed internet access.

    ATV Tours
How about exploring the desert on your own personal All-Terrain Vehicle? Cabo's desert terrain is perfect for a rugged ATV experience! Amigos Cabo Moto offers several tours ranging from 2-6 hours, journeying through the desert or roaring along the beach.

    Baja 1000 Race Cars
Can you handle a Chenoweth Magnum racecar just like the ones the pros use in the Baja 1000? Today you can experience high-performance off-road driving at an exclusive 1,500-acre racing ranch along the Pacific. Racing experts train you before cutting you loose on more than 5 miles of desert landscape! Bring along a friend and race through a groomed course of varied terrain with turns, twists, bumps and jumps that will challenge even the best drivers. Race your best and you might win the "Road King" trophy! Your racing experience includes a shuttle from downtown Cabo to the track, driver and vehicle operation, safety equipment and driving instruction from a Baja 1000 driver. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

    Cruises
Here's something really special! Experience the Buccaneer Queen, a unique tall ship built in 1885. The ship will take you back in time with its crew in pirate garb, wooden deck under your feet, and real working cannon muzzles poking out from the gun ports. On your way out of the harbor, you will hear the pirate history of the area as your professional captain takes you past the world famous "Arch", "Land's End", "Lover's Beach" and out into the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Participate in a battle between two pirate ships, but don't worry, they don't use the working cannons! For more information please visit http://www.loscabosguide.com/buccaneerqueen/index.html.

For a great cruise that gets you into the action, consider The Rissalena, a favorite boat. Owner/captain Eduardo keeps his ship in impeccable shape. His staff is truly attentive and all of them make wicked margaritas. Price includes open bar, lunch and sanitized snorkeling equipment. Whale Watching is same times in season. For more information please visit http://www.allaboutcabo.com/rissalena2.htm.

    Fishing
Cabo San Lucas is proudly known as the "Fishing Capital of the World" and it has a lot more than Marlin to offer. The fishermen of Cabo San Lucas bring in 800 species of game fish—Dorado (Hawaiian Mahi-Mahi), Yellowtail, Roosterfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Jack Crevalle, Sailfish, Grouper, and many more! From October to November, Los Cabos hosts the prestigious Pete Lapicola Charity Tournament, the Los Cabos Offshore Tournament, and the Bisbees Black and Blue Tournament. These tournaments bring anglers from all over the world to compete for 7-figure prizes!

Pisces Fleet has been well established in Cabo San Lucas for the past 20 years and is known for its consistency in catch rates and customer satisfaction. It also promotes conservation of billfish (marlin, sailfish and swordfish). Pisces has been recognized on numerous occasions by the Billfish Foundation for releasing the most striped marlin throughout the year, as well as receiving the Group Achievement Award in 1993. In 1995 Pisces Fleet was honored by the International Game Fish Association (worldwide governing body of fishing records), with the Conservation Award. Pisces recently added eight new yachts to their fleet of 28'-86' boats. Bare boat and all-inclusive options are available for parties 4-8 people. For more information please visit http://www.piscessportfishing.com/.

For smaller boats, consider Julio at the beach by Palmilla. Julio is a well-known fisherman in Los Cabos, offering 20' Pangas to 33' twin-engine cabin cruisers for 1-6 people. For those enjoying the water without the luxury of a head, we highly recommend going out on a Super Panga, a 23' vessel for 3-4 people. Trip packages include crew, tackle, fishing licenses, and live bait can be bought on board. Remember we can arrange to have our chefs prepare your filleted catch and serve you margaritas at your villa.

    Golfing
Cabo del Sol, Cabo Real, Palmilla—roll call for some of the world's best golf courses! The area's first, Cabo Real, was designed by Robert Trent Jones, and is a 7,000 yard, 18-hole course. Cabo Real (also known as the Cabo del Sol Country Club) hosted the 1996 and 1999 Senior Slam tournaments.

Cabo del Sol is a premier golf destination. Golf Digest ranks the Ocean Course 70th among the world's greatest golf courses and Jack Nicklaus says it has the three best finishing holes in golf. Tom Weiskopf's Desert Course twice hosted the Senior Slam, and the master plan calls for 54 holes in the coming years. For more information please visit http://www.cabodelsol.com/content/index.html.

Palmilla is the only 27-hole course in the area with the Desert, Ocean, and Mountain courses. This par-72, designed by Jack Nicklaus, has been ranked among the top 25 international golf resorts by Conde Naste. Ultimate Escapes' Casa OcÈano Bajas property is located on the 5th fairway of the Ocean Course, and #5 of the Mountain course is considered one of the best holes in Los Cabos. For more information please visit http://www.oneandonlyresorts.com/flash.html.

    Hiking
Come experience the "Sierra de la Laguna" (mountain range of the lake) on foot with a professional, bilingual guide, speaking vividly and knowledgeably about the flora and fauna in the surrounding area. Your hike begins with a scenic 40-minute drive to the base of the mountain range. You will be astounded to learn that such a rich land exists in the desert! All excursions include round-trip transportation, bilingual guide, snacks, lunch and beverages. Ask your Escape Planner for more details.

    Horseback Riding
Horseback riding for all levels of ability is available at several stables in the Los Cabos area. The Cuadra San Francisco Equestrian Center at the Cabo Real Resort is popular and advanced reservations are advised. Owner and master horseman Francisco Barrena Meraz has over 34 years experience training horses. His equestrian center offers both desert trail rides and equestrian school. For visitors to the area, a one- or two-hour trip through the Arroyo San Carlos or Venado Blanco is a great way to experience the desert and its many mysteries. You will see many quail, some coyotes, wild horses and rabbits. You will also experience the awe of riding through narrow canyons and amazing rock formations. Long pants are recommended for riding, as well as sunscreen and a hat. You'll work up a thirst on the ride, so bring a water bottle to carry with you. Cuadra San Francisco is located on Hwy 1 after the Cabo Real Golf course in front of Las Ventanas between the property and Cabo San Lucas. For more information please visit http://www.loscaboshorses.com/.

    Parasailing and Other Water Activities
If you'd like to rent a waverunner, kayak or go parasailing, there are two options. You can go to the Hilton/Melia Cabo Real and walk to the beach where you will find the toys of your dreams. The other option is to drive into Cabo to Medano Beach, where all the action is. There are a great variety of rental options and restaurants from which to choose. No reservation is required.

Check out the show at the Gigglin' Marlin or check out Kaboo. LASTLY go to the world-famous Squid Roe.

    Sightseeing
The combination of desert, ocean and mountains makes Los Cabos an intriguing and beautiful destination. In and around the surrounding area are many quaint Mexican villages, towns, and points of interest. We can arrange excursions and full-day trips to explore the history and the nature that Southern Baja has to offer.

Todos Santos (pop. 4,000) is approximately 70 km or 1 hour north of Cabo San Lucas and is a beautiful drive along the Pacific Ocean coast. Todos Santos is one of the lusher arroyo settlements in Baja. The town sits on a meseta (low plateau) buttressing the sierra foothills. Looming over Todos Santos to the east, the sierra provides an underground stream that irrigates dozens of orchards laden with mangoes, avocadoes, guavas, papayas, citrus, coconuts, and other fruits. Most of these are cultivated along the wide Arroyo de la Reforma to the town's immediate north, in an area commonly known as La Huerta or "the orchard." At the west end toward the beach is La Poza, a small freshwater lagoon favored by resident and migrating waterfowl. It was originally a Jesuit mission and a plantation for sugar cane and mangos. Today it is known for being an artists' retreat. Galleries are abundant in this tiny fishing village. A number of La Paz residents maintain homes here as temporary escapes from the Cortez coast's intense summer heat. These are complemented by a seasonal community of California refugees fleeing from the high-stress film and media worlds who make the town their winter retreat. Several farms in the area specialize in organic produce for the North American market. When in Todos, check out the Hotel California and have lunch at Santa Fe CafÈ if you are in the mood for Italian or Adobe for Mexican food. For more information please visit http://www.todossantos.cc/.

    Whale Watching
If you're visiting Los Cabos in January through March, it's likely that at some point during your stay you'll be treated to the sight of whales spouting off shore. Many whales that feed in northern waters migrate south each year. From mid to late fall, gray whales make the longest migration of any mammal, a 6,000 mile journey from their summer homes in the Bering and Chukchi Seas between Alaska and Siberia, to winter in the warm waters of Baja California and the Sea of Cortez.

If you want to see mothers and their calves firsthand, whale-watching trips to Magdalena Bay (the closest calving area to Los Cabos) are best made with daytrip fly-in tours. Aereo Calafia offers tours during the whale watching season. This is a completely different experience than whale watching off the coast of Los Cabos as you are in a protected area of extremely calm, shallow water. Here you will be able to interact with the whales and get much closer to them than in the open ocean. The opportunity to pet whales is not uncommon. If you have more time to spend a few days in Magdalena Bay, there are several tour companies that operate from Loreto as a base camp. For more information please visit http://www.loscabosguide.com/aereocalafia/index.html.

    Kids Activities
Cabo San Lucas is a resort destination that has plenty of activities for kids. Activities in and around Cabo San Lucas include: horse-riding, catamarans, para-sailing, ATV's, arts and culture, beaches, diving, snorkeling, eco-tours, kayaking, hiking, fishing, nightlife, restaurants, shopping, and whale-watching, including air-charters to Magdalena Bay for whale-watching... and much more.

Cabo San Lucas has kid-friendly restaurants, beaches and resorts. Many of the resorts offer Kid's programs.

    Beaches
A family vacation without a beach? Miles and miles of beach stretch from Cabo San Lucas all the way to San Jose del Cabo. Not all are suited for families as the waves can be large and the undertow strong. Some, however, are especially good for kids, including Playa Medano in Cabo San Lucas, which offers safe swimming conditions along with many watersport activities.

Santa MarÃŒa Bay, Chileno Bay, and Playa Palmilla, near San Jose del Cabo, with their calm waters are also excellent places for children.

    The Glass Factory
The entire family will be amazed watching Mexican craftsmen make beautiful glassware and other items at the Fabrica de Vidrio. For more information please visit http://www.homeandabroad.com/c/26/Site/60729_La_F_brica_de_Vidrio_Soplado_visit.html

    Catch of the Day
